Road trip to L.A.
A legendary destination, an iconic road nestled between white sandy beaches and rugged headlands, landscapes seen a thousand times on the big screen… What a beautiful backdrop for a journey shared by mother and son.
I love traveling with my kids! It’s a perfect opportunity to create memories. I took great pleasure in sharing my most recent journey with my son. As he wanted to visit California, I suggested a road trip along the West Coast, taking the famous Pacific Coast Highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. To enjoy it to the fullest, we rented a small convertible… for the sun, the music, and the wind in our hair! From San Francisco to Santa Monica
For our first day in the USA, we decided to play tourist in San Francisco. Our schedule included a cruise under the famous Golden Gate Bridge, a visit to Alcatraz, and a long walk on the colorful Fisherman’s Wharf. We returned to our hotel spent but elated and were just as much taken by the hospitality and attentive staff at the Ritz-Carlton. Located in the upscale Nob Hill neighborhood, this century old hotel with its majestic architecture affords the luxury and comfort that you would expect, even offering a personalized pet service!
The following day we headed to Monterey and Carmel. The weather was chilly, but we didn’t care, as the sun was shining as we followed the ocean shore. In Carmel-by-the-Sea, beloved city of Clint Eastwood, we discovered a place with a unique style, full of lovely shops and art galleries. L’Auberge Carmel, a member of Relais & Châteaux, offers visitors a host of activities: a sunset sail, a visit to a vineyard, or even a day with the Chef.
After this delightful stopover, we took the 17-Mile Drive, hoping to come across some celebrities (to no avail). We stopped at Nepenthe, highly recommended by my friend Josée. Located 250 meters above the sea, the restaurant offers a terrace with a breathtaking view, an essential stop on the road to Big Sur.
What can I say about the breathtaking scenery and the tortuous but spectacular roads? Who hasn’t noticed this famous road in car advertisements? Or dreamed of a spectacular sunset over the Pacific? Several times, we pulled over to contemplate the sea, and to walk along the beach. We made stops at Dolphin Bay in Pismo Beach, a condo-hotel of interest to those traveling with family, and the Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara. Once again, we enjoyed a warm welcome, extraordinary properties, and incredible sunsets.
Last stop: Santa Monica, where we lodged at the chic hotel, Shutters on the Beach, with its beachside trails and famous pier (where only the bravest souls jump into the cold water!) What a great getaway to bond with loved ones, and to take in plenty of sun!
