The day is winding down. Increasingly we take pleasure in retreating into our own cocoon, lying in bed with a book before bedtime, or with a tablet to start the day. Nestled in a sea of cushions, pillows and blankets, we enjoy autumn from a different perspective.

Designed 20 years ago by Vico Magistretti for Flou, this orientalinspired Tadao bed hasn’t aged a day with its lacquered slats (available also in walnut) that run from top to bottom. To complete a well-equipped but uncluttered room there’s nothing like a personalized wardrobe system: all components are customized according to individual needs, and the finishes according to taste.

Leaving your clothes in sight requires a wardrobe with panache. Enter the Ubik by Poliform. The drawers and shelves come in white melamine, walnut, and natural or Spessart oak. The collection is available in six different finishes, and in eight glass colours, as well as a mirrored version. The only thing left to do is to refresh that wardrobe of beautiful dresses and chic ensembles…

Italian designer Paola Navone brings a feminine touch to the Big Bed, designed in 2010 for Poliform. Simple lines and comfort characterize this piece, described as a ‘nocturnal island’. A wide selection of fabrics and leathers are available to dress the bed, including removable fabrics for easy maintenance.

This Duetto bed by Flou is quite versatile. It conceals a second mattress and box spring set while occupying limited space in its sofa configuration. You can also choose to install a back, or even equip it with bottom drawers (in the same fabric). Everything is completely removable via a system of Velcro fasteners.

Those who pay particular attention to craftsmanship, and have a more conservative approach to bedroom furnishings, will be taken with this cherry wood Finger Lakes Collection bed made by hand in the United States. To complete the ensemble, Stickley offers a furniture series in the same style.

The Calla boat bed by designer Mariette Himes Gomez is dressed in upholstered fabric and has a very feminine touch. Available in several formats (including California King), and in a variety of fabrics and leathers, the Calla is a product of century old company, Hickory Chair, of North Carolina, furniture capital of the United States.

American manufacturer Century Furniture designed this Barrington poster bed. What’s interesting is that the piece is available in a wide range of finishes, all hand-made according to age-old techniques! The headboard is adorned with a linen covered panel and the posts come in varying heights. Here, the bedside table displays the same gold piping finish.

Inspired by the success of the Calla bed (see 07), renowned New York interior designer Mariette Himes Gomez extended her research to create the Chamber Bed. The design highlights the use of luxurious padded fabric piping that girds the entire piece.

This bed from the Sablon collection is majestic, the fully padded and slightly curved headboard leaves a perception of affecting ambient sound, lending to a calm and relaxing atmosphere.

The Stealth bed by Bonaldo is available in several sizes (including some outsized sure to delight tall people) and coverings are offered in fabric, leather, or leatherette. Its sculptural form is well suited for use in large spaces, where the piece can be seen from all aspects.
