Marc-André Roy, urban visionary

Avenue Design

PRESIDENT OF SOTRAMONT, MARC-ANDRÉ ROY DREAMS OF BUILDING A CITY IN THE HEART OF THE CITY. HIS BOIS-FRANC PROJECT, WITH OVER 3,000 HOUSING UNITS IN ST-LAURENT, HAS ALMOST MADE HIS DREAM A REALITY. THIS VISIONARY HAS MANY OTHER DESIGNS IN THE PIPELINE AS WELL: FROM MONTRÉAL TO CALGARY, INCLUDING LAVAL, HE HOPES TO CREATE AN URBAN PLAN THAT WILL MAKE HIS MARK. HE HAS SHARED SOME OF HIS FAVOURITE THINGS WITH US.

Your favourite restaurant?“In Montreal, it’s M sur Masson. In McMinnville, a little town in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, it’s Nick’s Italian Cafe, and in Zappallar, one of the most beautiful seaside resorts in Chile, it’s El Chiringuito.”

What do you recommend as a must try?“A glass of Pinot noir.”

For a business lunch we’ll most likely find you…?“At Piazza Bois-Franc, an Italian restaurant only a few steps from my office in St-Laurent.”

A town that inspires you?“London, because of its friendly inhabitants, its architecture, and its parks.”

What distinguishes Quebec from the rest of the world?“Because of our language and our geographic location, Quebec entrepreneurs must stand out to succeed. Our daring, which pushes us to take risks, and our ability to find solutions to complex problems, is what distinguishes us.”

A great painter?“Jacques Payette – a Québécois.”

Your guilty pleasure?“A glass of wine; such a pleasure to savour it, and great for relaxing too.”

The accomplishment you are most proud of?“My three sons.”

Something that most people don’t know about you?“From Monday to Friday, every morning at exactly 6 a.m., I work out. It’s not so much that I enjoy it, but because it relieves stress.”

Three values that define you? “ Integrity, courage, and self-discipline.”

Your philosophy of life? “You can’t change the past; you must look forward.”
