IT&#8217;S 22 DEGREES UNDER A CLEAR SKY AND THE FRAGRANCE OF SPICES WAFTING IN FROM NEXT DOOR IS COMFORTING. I&#8217;M ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD ON A QUIET STREET, FIVE MINUTES FROM THE MAIN ARTERY LEADING TO TAKSIM SQUARE, THE HEART OF ISTANBUL.<\/p>\n<p>This is my fourth visit to Turkey, my first took place in 2000, and I\u00a0observe that Istanbul is constantly evolving. From the souks of the\u00a0Grand Bazaar to the patchwork of trendy restaurants in the Cihangir\u00a0quarter, from the call to prayer \u2013 which can be heard from anywhere at\u00a0various times of the day &#8211; to high-tech digital facilities popping up on\u00a0downtown buildings, Istanbul (formerly Constantinople, and before that,\u00a0Byzantium), built at the interface of Europe and Asia, is simply unique,\u00a0magical, truly fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>Designated European Capital of Culture in 2010, Istanbul is a liberal\u00a0metropolis, open and safe. Many young Turks, after having lived abroad,\u00a0return home, bringing with them knowledge of new ways and\u00a0experiences. A stroll through Istanbul is a journey in time, but also a\u00a0parade of modernity.<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s most agreeable to visit the old city, it\u2019s mosques and other\u00a0busy historic sites, Istanbul has more to offer. Hidden neighbourhoods\u00a0rise up to reveal many pleasing surprises. You have to walk around,\u00a0regardless of the hour, in Taksim, \u00c7ukurcuma, Galatasaray, Galata,\u00a0Tunnel, Pera, to discover small local restaurants, resident designer\u00a0boutiques and antique shops, luxury stores, contemporary art galleries\u00a0and happening discos. So find time to sleep beforehand, because\u00a0Istanbul offers something to intoxicate day and night. It\u2019s Europe with an\u00a0oriental flair in an architectural setting, a remnant of the Ottoman empire.\u00a0Warm, entertaining, mysterious, chaotic, Istanbul has something for just\u00a0about everyone, but not for the inexperienced traveller.<\/p>\n<p>Istanbulites love an evening out, to talk and hang out in the streets,\u00a0meeting at outdoor terraces. They appreciate the simple pleasures of\u00a0life and know how to have fun. Leave your baggage and worries at the\u00a0hotel and flirt with this city. Unlike our beautiful, but occasionally\u00a0sanitized, North American metropolises, Istanbul offers an utterly\u00a0charming and irresistible experience.
