DRIVE A FEW HOURS SOUTHWEST OF MONTREAL AND YOU’LL HAPPEN UPON PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY ON THE SHORES OF LAKE ONTARIO. ALTHOUGH BARELY TWICE THE AREA OF THE ISLAND OF MONTREAL, THIS LITTLE CORNER OF HEAVEN IN RURAL ONTARIO HAS MANY TREASURES FOR THOSE WILLING TO SEEK THEM OUT.

There is, of course, Sandbanks Provincial Park, a very popular spot for nature lovers. But the Park is but the tip of the iceberg as the area has much more to offer pleasure seekers. With what seems like endless wineries, distilleries, microbreweries and fabulous restaurants, P.E.C. as it is colloquially abbreviated has everything to satisfy one’s inner epicurean, while connoisseurs of art and architecture are up for a similar treat. In fact, the proud inhabitants of this region do everything they can to preserve and enhance the picturesque appearance of their homes, turning town streets into veritable open-air museums. The best way to enjoy their efforts is to keep your eyes open as you drive up and down the concession roads.
We had an opportunity to do just that inside a spiffy all-new Range Rover Velar, a jewel of design and technology. With its unique Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, passengers can use the integrated technology to control all of the vehicle’s features with a few clicks. For example, it was easy to connect our smartphones to listen to our favourite playlists and stay in contact with our friends, all while receiving a relaxing massage in our seats (passenger and driver) as we enjoyed the gorgeous County scenery. Thanks to its luxurious, yet definitively modern interior, the Velar offers the best of both worlds: intuitive handling and extraordinary comfort for the most demanding drivers, great for those country roads.
We found a similar luxury in the village of Wellington. A small-town showcase of art and fine dining, the Drake Devonshire Inn, the hotel chain’s most recent outpost, has brought a modern twist to the County. This welcoming 13-room boutique hotel is not only the perfect spot for lounging, it has also made regional producers an integral part of its offering. Guests can therefore enjoy incredibly fresh local produce, appreciate the work of local artists and get a feel for County life.
Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or simply want to explore a beautiful slice of Canada close to home, Prince Edward County is just the ticket, seemingly immune to the passage of time. In addition to sitting pretty, P.E.C.’s friendly people and abundance of activities offer visitors an a la carte pace at which to enjoy their journey, far from the pressures of city life.
