Rome was not built in a day, as the saying goes, and this is also true of Groupe Mach. When Vincent Chiara was young, he did not dream of going into real estate. Born into an immigrant family who settled in east-end Montreal in the 1950s, Chiara watched his parents do everything they could to offer their family a better life. They worked hard and soon opened their own local business—a grocery store frequented by immigrants from the neighbourhood. Inspired by their example, Chiara quickly learned that success requires hard work. He began studying commerce at McGill, while continuing to work in the family business. He then switched into law, moving to Université de Sherbrooke.
Law was, without question, his first love. Determined to succeed and make a name for himself, Chiara started his own firm, primarily practicing commercial law. As his firm’s reputation grew, so did his client base and his expertise in real estate law. His talent and instincts were soon noted by certain clients who invited him to become an investment partner. It was at this moment that Vincent Chiara’s fate was sealed, and a new passion was born.
Since a law practice and real estate investment both take a lot of time, he quickly realized that he would have to devote his full attention to only one of his passions if he wished to truly excel. After practicing law for 15 years, he decided to follow his heart and enter the field of real estate development, founding Groupe Mach in the year 2000. Now 18 years later, Groupe Mach owns 26 million square feet of property.
A passionate entrepreneur, he has built a team that shares his enthusiasm. When asked about his major achievements, he immediately notes that he is fortunate to have put together a superb team. Brick and mortar are nothing without a dedicated team to bring them to life, a theme evident in all Groupe Mach ventures. For a project to be successful, it must meet the following criteria: it must seamlessly integrate into the proposed environment, meet the needs of the people, and be a driving force of development, a major project for the community, and environmentally friendly. According to Vincent Chiara, these are the ingredients of a legacy project—something that will benefit the entire community rather than simply adding another building to the landscape.

In addition to being totally devoted to his company, he is very passionate about contemporary art. Eclectic by design, his collection features works by local artists, both established and emerging. Chiara displays the same keen knowledge about the works he owns as he does about business. He knows how to look beyond appearances to discover that ‘special something’ that differentiates a great project from a good one, and a timeless piece of art from one that is merely interesting. Furthermore, his views on art, like his real estate projects, embrace openness. He believes that for a work or a project to be considered truly valuable, it must be shared with as many people as possible and reflect our society. For example, he recently hired Lucas Beaufort, a young French artist, to paint a façade for the new Groupe Mach offices that will also be a work of art for Montrealers to enjoy.
