A businessman specializing in software, Ned Atalla has lived in Toronto since 2006 with his wife – a Quebec native – and their three children. Wakeboarding aficionados, Atalla was searching for a lake where they could indulge in their favourite sport. Winning location: the Laurentians. The goal? The perfect cottage. However, the hunt was a short one. There was simply nothing interesting to buy. And yet, at the last minute, Atalla fell upon a house that impressed in both style and location. The For Sale sign was, however, old news; the home had already found a buyer. Not to be denied, an unconditional offer was made, even after seeing the home simply from the outside! “Two days after seeing it, the other offer fell through, and I don’t know why.” He received a call at 8 p.m. in Toronto, and at 6 a.m. the following morning, Atalla was landing at Trudeau International. The deal was in the bag.
Despite the ‘love-at-first-sight’ sale, the property required a lot of TLC. Perfect, as this man is passionate! It took a year of work to make the home habitable, and two additional years to achieve its current condition. Atalla drew up all the plans and became general contractor for the expansion project. Atalla dove straight in, literally. “I am very competent,” he explains.
The original building was stripped down to the studs. First order of business was the mechanical, electrical, and heating (all the floors are heated). The home is equipped with intelligent control systems and fully autonomous, even in power outages. Atalla took full advantage of the basement space, creating bedrooms for his children. A tunnel was dug to connect the existing house with the garage, a playful touch to the interior space. As Mr. Atalla loves people and knows how to entertain, a large terrace overlooking the lake was added, with a surrounding bar and infinity pool (a unique design Atalla imagined). He also created a recessed concrete space with steps, at the center of which, a fireplace was installed.
The garage houses cars and boats, of course, as well as the panoply of standard equipment for country living, whether for tending to the property or just having fun on the water. Atalla is definitely a party-minded individual: colorful sofas, a large, convivial dining table, panoramic sliding windows, direct access to the terrace, etc. Everything has been designed for happy and successful gatherings.
“This house is not simply an investment,” philosophizes the owner. “This is a family home.” Loving your kids, enjoying life, and entertaining friends: the good life indeed!
