TAORMINA IS KNOWN AS THE “THE JEWEL OF SICILY” AND WITH GOOD REASON! SITTING ATOP CLIFFS OVERLOOKING THE WATER, THE ANCIENT CITY IS ONE OF THE PRETTIEST TOWNS IN MESSINA. IT’S HARD NOT TO SUCCUMB TO HER CHARMS AS YOU TAKE IN THE BREATHTAKING VIEWS OF THE TURQUOISE IONIAN SEA. FROM THE CALABRIAN COAST TO THE MOUTH OF MOUNT ETNA, THE SMELL OF SALT WASHED FLOWERS PERFUMES THE AIR.

enjoyed strolling the winding little streets that have been witness to so much history, from Greek and Roman times, through the Medieval era and into the modern age. The beautiful Greek Theatre still stands, surrounded by the cypress and Barbary fig trees that symbolize the city. Dating from the third century B.C.E., the theatre offers one of the most spectacular views in all of Sicily, and is one of the island’s most popular tourist attractions. You can even take in an opera or a rock concert!

The Corso Umberto is Taormina’s main street, crossing the town from Porta Messina to Porta Catania. You’ll find cafes, restaurants and a variety of lovely shops, many of which are open until 10pm. Piazza IX Aprile is the main square, and the ideal location for taking fabulous photos, especially at sunset.

In summer, Taormina is a hugely popular beach resort. If you enjoy a spot in the sun, you’ll have your choice of beaches, including Mazzaro, Spisone, Mazzeo or the stunning Isola Bella, each one a gem. Don’t be surprised if fishermen approach you with offers to tour the caves, particularly the famous Blue Grotto.

Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, is surprisingly close. I highly recommend a tour with Volcanic Wine Experience, whose informative guides will greatly enhance your appreciation and understanding of this force of nature.

Sicily is known for its viticulture, and there are plenty of delightful local wines to discover. As for hotels and restaurants, Taormina does not disappoint, in quality nor in quantity. In fact, the warmth of the people and their friendly smiles made every day of our visit a joy. We recommend having Taormina top your travel list.
