“I discovered Mile-Ex when my children were living there. I really love the area, which is a mix of older properties and industrial buildings, many of which are being renovated and retrofitted,” explains Céragrès owner Guy Gervais, who purchased his property last year because it was exactly what he was looking for. “There was absolutely nothing to do. So I remodelled everything, because that’s how I am!” he chuckles. The house was used for photo shoots as it previously belonged to a photographer. This is now Gervais’ private space. “The renovations lasted six months while we installed very sophisticated technology and home automation systems,” he says. The bathroom and much of the flooring were changed to update the décor. Large slate tiles now cover the floors in the kitchen and upstairs. However, the original brick pavers were kept in the living room, along with the polished concrete in the dining room. These variations in flooring materials help delineate the different areas in the large open space.

“The very first time I visited the house, the mezzanine reminded me of a library because of the wood. It created a lot of warmth. “

New white Carrara marble counters and subway tiles give the kitchen a timeless look that is both elegant and relaxed. Furniture choices like wooden tables and storage units, chairs with delicately curved backs and inviting armchairs all illustrate the owner’s desire to create a fresh, welcoming atmosphere in an otherwise angular space edged in black steel.

A palette of grey, ebony, cognac and white can be found throughout the house, which is bathed in natural light. Exterior vegetation along with indoor plants add a shot of colour.

An iconic Corona chair—with its singular look and bright hues—has pride of place in the master bedroom. The bathroom was completely redesigned; the bathtub was removed and replaced by a large shower with a built-in steam bath. The private areas are designed for rest and relaxation, as are the Japanese-inspired front and back gardens. The climbing vine on the wall, mature trees and gravelled ground give the property an exotic, Zen atmosphere. “It’s incredible. Here we are, enjoying peace and quiet, in the middle of Montreal,” notes Gervais, captivated by the buzz and youthful spirit of his up-and-coming neighbourhood.
