With the Globe Trotter collection by Roche Bobois, Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, invites us to stray from the ordinary and enter a world of poetic fantasy.
Marcel Wanders is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Known for the ease with which he combines styles, influences and materials, he has always sought to shatter restrictive dogmas in design, in pursuit of something more human. That philosophy has guided the Globe Trotter collection he produced recently for Roche Bobois. “This collection is a tribute to the adventurer we all dreamed of being. A journey is a transformative experience, and we wanted each piece to capture the feeling of bringing home worldly treasures from faraway places,” Wanders explains.
Heavily inspired by the iconography and adventure novels of the late 19th century, Wanders has created a gallery of furniture and accessories to spark the imagination, with pieces that are almost more fanciful than functional. Indeed, fancy practically takes flight in the armrests of the Montgolfière sofa (a nod to the inventors of the hot-air balloon). Equally hard to resist is the exotic Japanese pull of the Dojo bookcase, or the mystery of the Wonder cabinet, whose doors open to reveal gorgeous collages. This wonderful collection is full of surprises, but rest assured: the great designer knows how to move people while staying true to his philosophy and the quality everyone expects from Roche Bobois.
